ONE RAT CAN KILL 50 NATIVE BIRDS IN ITS LIFETIME

Predator Free BOP is a community led, backyard trapping initiative that aims to bring native birds back to our suburbs and help make NZ predator free by 2050.

The biggest threat to our native birds are the rats who have taken over our native bush and urban areas. With one rat likely to kill up to 50 birds in its lifetime we need your help to get rid of rats and give our native species a fighting chance.

With the support of Tammy Bruce, Wild about NZ, a team of Whakamarama School students are part of the movement: Predator Free Bay of Plenty - Battle for Our Native Birds.

Today hosted opportunity for Luke, Shanae, Lauchlan, Stuart, Lillia and Jacob to get trapping underway around our school. With the help of Predator Free Bay of Plenty sponsors (Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Envirohub, NZ Landcare Trust, Bay Conservation Alliance and Department of Conservation) the team set 6 traps around the school which they will now be monitoring and sharing information with the predator free programme.
